As of 2025, the Future Homes Standard will revolutionise the construction of new homes across the UK. One of the most significant changes lies in thermal efficiency, especially in glazing. Windows and doors have long been a weak point in building envelopes. Now, with tougher U-value targets, the role of high-performance glazing is more important than ever. Ultra Vision Glazing is fully prepared to meet and exceed these new demands. This article explains what the Future Homes Standard requires, how U-values are calculated, and how our advanced systems help developers, builders, and architects stay compliant with the standard.
What Is the Future Homes Standard?
The Future Homes Standard is a set of building regulations designed to reduce carbon emissions in new homes. Due to come into force in 2025, it will require new dwellings to produce seventy-five to eighty percent less carbon than those built under previous standards. This means airtightness, heating systems, and most importantly, thermal performance must all be upgraded.
Glazing plays a vital role in achieving low energy use. Poorly performing windows and doors lead to heat loss, cold draughts, and higher energy bills. The Future Homes Standard addresses this with tighter requirements on the thermal efficiency of building elements, including minimum and average U-values for glazing.

Understanding U-Values in Glazing
A U-value measures the amount of heat that passes through a building element. The lower the U-value, the better the insulation. For windows and doors, this includes both the glass and the frame.
There are two types of U-values used in glazing. The first is the Ug-value, which refers to the glass only. The second is the Uw-value, which represents the whole window, including the frame and spacer. The Uw-value is the figure that matters for compliance. It reflects the thermal performance of the complete installation. For the Future Homes Standard, expected glazing targets are as follows.
Windows must achieve a Uw-value of 1.2 W/m²K or lower. Glazed doors (with more than 60 percent glass) must also achieve a U-value of 1.2 W/m²K or lower. Solid or mostly solid doors must meet a U-value of 1.0 W/m²K or better. These values are subject to final confirmation when the regulations are formally published. However, the industry is already designing products with these benchmarks in mind.
How Ultra Vision Glazing Meets Future Homes U-Value Targets
At Ultra Vision Glazing, we don’t just meet minimum requirements—we aim to future-proof your specification. Our advanced glazing systems deliver exceptional thermal efficiency, thanks to a combination of intelligent frame design, high-performance glass, and precision manufacturing. Our typical window systems offer Uw-values as low as 1.1 W/m²K, depending on the configuration and size. In most triple-glazed setups, we achieve even lower values, well within standard.
We ensure thermal performance through several design choices. Our aluminium and steel frames are thermally broken using modern polyamide barriers. Our double and triple-glazed units are filled with argon gas for enhanced insulation. Low-emissivity coatings reflect heat back into the building, reducing unnecessary heat loss. We also use warm-edge spacer bars to limit thermal bridging at the glass edges. Finally, we focus on expert installation that eliminates air leakage and ensures the full performance of each unit.
The Importance of Glass Specification
Not all glazing is equal. Choosing the right unit composition makes a major difference to energy efficiency. At Ultra Vision Glazing, we tailor every installation to the needs of the building and the orientation of each elevation. Typical compliant double-glazed units consist of a 4mm toughened outer pane with a low-emissivity coating, a 16mm gap filled with argon gas, a warm-edge spacer bar, and a 4mm inner pane of float or laminated glass.
For higher performance, we recommend triple glazing, particularly on north-facing walls or exposed elevations. Triple-glazed units can reduce Uw-values to between 0.8 and 1.0 W/m²K, depending on the frame used. Solar gain is also a consideration. Our team advises on G-values to ensure you do not compromise overheating regulations under Part O. Every system is specified for both energy retention and solar control.
While glass gets the attention, the frame matters too. A thermally poor frame can bring down the whole window’s Uw-value. Ultra Vision Glazing uses frame systems with proven thermal breaks, low conductivity materials, and strong seals.
Our slimline aluminium ranges include thermal breaks up to 39mm, maximising energy retention without compromising on contemporary aesthetics. For traditional projects or steel-look designs, we also offer thermally broken steel systems with competitive Uw ratings. Each product we supply comes with verified thermal performance data, making SAP calculations and compliance assessments straightforward.

Compliance Without Compromise
A common concern is that tighter energy standards will limit the use of glass. Fortunately, Ultra Vision Glazing proves this is not the case. Our high-performance systems allow for large glazed areas while still complying with or exceeding Future Homes targets.
This means you can enjoy open-plan living, sliding doors, roof glazing, and modern minimal detailing—without sacrificing thermal efficiency or facing compliance issues. Whether you are planning a family home, a multi-plot site, or a bespoke extension, we provide tailored glazing packages that deliver performance and style.
